Adham Khan's Tomb

Description

The tomb is located at Seth Sarai, Mehrauli, New Delhi, this tomb is built by the AKBAR, The tomb was built in 1561, and lies to the north of the Qutub Minar, Mehrauli, Delhi, immediately before one reaches the town of Mehrauli, it is now a protected monument by Archaeological Survey of India. Bhool Bhullaya, made of grey sandstone and rubble masonry is one of the few Akbar-era monuments in Delhi. The dome is crowned by a red sandstone finial. The circular verandah has three arches on each of its eight sides, and eight arched entrances open into the dark chamber.

History

Adham Khan, son of Mahem Anga, a wet nurse of emperor Akbar, was a general in Akbar's army. In A.D. 1562, he killed Ataga Khan, husband of another wet nurse Jiji Anga, whereupon he was thrown down from the roof by the order of the emperor. He and his mother, both are buried in this tomb built by Akbar. Adham Khan In the 1830s, a British officer named Blake of Bengal Civil Service converted this tomb into his residential apartment and removed the graves to make way for his dining hall. Though the officer died soon, it continued to be used as a rest house for many years by the British, and at one point even as a police station and a post office. The tomb was vacated and later restored by the orders of Lord Curzon, and the grave of Adham Khan has since been restored to the site, and lies right below the central dome, though that of his mother Maham Anga never was.

• This tomb is open all days and there are no any ticket charges for entry.

Attraction

• It is popularly known as Bul-bulaiyan (a Labyrinth or Maze), for a visitor as he often loses his way amidst the several passages in the thickness of its walls. It lies on the walls of Lal Kot and rising from a terrace enclosed by an octagonal wall provided with low towers at the corners. It consists of a domed octagonal chamber in the Lodhi Dynasty style and Sayyid dynasty early in the 14th century. It has a verandah on each side pierced by three openings.

• This is one of the examples of historical architecture which is so much different from other and everyone enjoys to take a tour here Enclosure wall of the Tomb premise Corridors of the Tomb This is an elevated Lodhi style octagonal tomb with a corridor outside the central dome. Small minarets stand on all edges of the octagon. Stars from the main road take you to the elevated platform, where this tomb stands. Two other entrance is situated towards the rear, but are no longer used and are in bad condition. The center hall contains a restored grave, supposed to be of Adam Khan. However, the original grave was destroyed by Britishers long back (see Destruction and Misuse).
